Let’s stop the climate disaster together!

The governments of Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia must take immediate action towards climate neutrality in 2050

We urge citizens to sign the appeal to support climate protection actions and the transition of economies and energy sectors in the Visegrad countries.

The petition with your signature will be sent to the governments from all four countries

Let’s stop the climate disaster together!

Impacts of climate change for the Visegrad group countries are not a distant future, it is the present. These already worsen the quality of life of the inhabitants of the regions, bring losses to the economy and create barriers to further social and economic development. Climate change constitutes a growing threat to ecosystems, and extreme weather is a threat to our safety and life.

The recent special IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report clearly states that we must act immediately to prevent a climate disaster, halting global warming at 1,5 C.

We have only around 10 years to radically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and, by the middle of this century, ensure that the European and World economy and society develop in a carbon neutral manner.

Unfortunately, the governments of Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary, contrary to the vast majority of EU countries, blocked the adoption by the European Union of the goal of achieving  climate neutrality in 2050. In December this year, another attempt will be made... We have to remember that achieving this goal is the only way to ensure safety for ourselves, our children and grandchildren.

However, there is a positive example of Slovakia, which decided that the coal phase-out in the energy sector will be done by 2023. Slovakia can be a good model for the other countries of the Visegrad Group and should be the leader of the whole group mobilizing countries in achieving the goal of decarbonising Europe. Hungary has declared that they will stop using coal as a source of electricity by 2030 - it is also a good step towards climate protection.

Climate change has become a reality. This is the last moment not only for politicians, but also for all citizens to undertake urgent actions. An important decision will be taken in December 2019, which will depend on whether Europe will achieve climate neutrality in 2050.

Therefore, we call:
  1. the governments from Poland and the Czech Republic for a strong coal phase-out from energy production by 2030 and – also the Hungarian government - not to oppose the European Commission over the zero-emission target by 2050
  2. the Slovak government to maintain the adopted climate and energy policy as well as to mobilize and support the other countries of the Visegrad Group to adopt ambitious climate protection actions
  3. the governments of all four countries of the Visegrad Group to:
    • implement development programs that will ensure that in 2050 the economy in our region will be free from GHG emissions
    • support the European Union's efforts to introduce more ambitious targets for the development of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency reaching 40-50% by 2030
    • increase support for civil society and community activities within the implementation of climate policy objectives

Support the idea!
